$54.99 bottle / $299.94($49.99) six-pack Les Poyeux is no ordinary single vineyard, but rather, as evidenced most famously by Clos Rougeard’s bottling from this site (at around $300), the top red wine vineyard in the Loire Valley. Les Poyeux would certainly classify as Grand Cru if the Loire Valley had such official classifications. Antoine’s small plot of Les Poyeux abuts that of Clos Rougeard. Sanzay’s version sits as the less oaky equivalent, not to mention still a relative bargain. With aromas and flavors that are all Cabernet Franc, this wine behaves more like Red Burgundy in the way it presents itself on the palate. Sanzay’s 2021 Les Poyeux displays layers of damp earth, brambly blackberry, candied raspberry, tobacco, tea leaf, and green pepper aromatically with most of those themes repeating on the generous but structured palate. As one of the world’s greatest under-the-radar collectibles, Sanzay’s 2021 is poised to deliver thrills for the next 25 years. In today’s market, if this were a Bordeaux, it would fetch $400, and if it were a Burgundy, probably closer to $1,000 (for a small, bluechip producer making wine from the greatest terroir/vineyard of its type.) Savor with prime rib, herb-roasted pork, duck, game, and charcuterie. So, who’s gonna get lucky today and snag some of this rarity? More than likely, this will be the last time we can get enough to feature it. Limited.
$69.99 bottle / $395.94($65.99) six-pack Speaking of Les Gréchons, Stephen Tanzer notes: “..is more or less an extension of the grand crus of Corton… like a mini Corton-Charlemagne…” Indeed, Les Gréchons lies to the east of grand cru Corton-Renardes (just below the Bois de Corton) at an elevation between 900 and 1,200 which has become very favorable in Burgundy’s consistently hotter climate. The site’s chalky soils, rich in fossilized material, is noble indeed. The nose is abundantly floral and shows just the slightest hint of oak. The palate is rich and textured, which is reflective of its position on the hill of Corton. Flavors of white peach, citrus zest and a hint of honey are supported by a strong mineral core and balancing acidity. Easy to love right now, this premier cru will only gain in complexity over the next five to eight years. A steal for this level of White Burgundy. Limited.

His “humble” Bourgogne Blanc is from the Les Veuillons vineyard, just east of Chablis and with similar chalky soil. This is 100% Chardonnay raised in neutral oak barrels that offers really fine texture, precise fruit and a touch of chalky minerality. The balance is suburb. Fans of White Burgundy and Oregon Chardonnay will find plenty to love here.

Cameron’s 2023 “Willamette Valley” Pinot Noir is 100% Dundee Hills fruit from some of the finest sites in the appellation: Abbey Ridge, Clos Electrique and La Colina. The 2023 has a more depth and complexity than you would expect from a Pinot Noir selling under $30 - again, classic Cameron. This might be the best Cameron “Willamette Valley” Pinot Noir in a long time.
Rosso di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese) is the little brother of the producer’s Brunello di Montalcino and is meant to be enjoyed with minimal cellaring time. Val di Suga’s, from the outstanding 2021 vintage, is superb Rosso di Montalcino with more complexity than most Brunello, but is ready to enjoy now and over the next five to seven years and is very versatile at the table. “Flush with medicinal herbs, the 2021 Rosso Di Montalcino jumps from the glass with notes of cranberry compote and rose petal. Medium-bodied and energetic with the refreshing acidity of orange zest and pomegranate as well as fine tannins, it is zippy and focused, with a vibrant linear approach. The highly esteemed Paolo Scavino winery is famous for making very age-worthy cru Barolos. Scavino’s 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is made for immediate pleasure and that’s not so bad! The nose offers pretty Nebbiolo aromas while the palate is ripe and juicy with raspberry and cherry fruit cradled by suave tannins and given lift by good acidity in this medium-full-bodied red. A touch of La Mora earth adds complexity. Enjoy this crowd-pleasing Nebbiolo now and over the next three to five years with mushroom risotto, pizza, tagliatelle with meat sauce, burgers, etc. “The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo offers lovely depth in an understated style that is quite appealing. This is some serious white wine! Trebbiano Abruzzese is a completely different grape variety than the more common Trebbiano Toscana, or any of the many related clones going under the Trebbiano moniker. This is 100% old vine Trebbiano Abruzzese grown in a little 7.4 acre vineyard on limestone at hight elevation. Because 99% of the wine-buying public has no idea how good Trebbiano d’Abruzzo can be, the wines are very inexpensive, and so very few wineries strive to make great Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Along with Emidio Pepe and Valentini, Tiberio is one of three best producers in Abruzzo who do strive, and succeed at making great Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Tiberio’s 2023 is the real deal. While young and pulsing with energy, this wine is still just a baby and will improve for years to come. Easy to enjoy on its own, it is incredibly versatile at the table pairing beautifully with pastas and other grain dishes, sausages, quail, sea bass and all kinds of vegetarian dishes. “The 2023 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo opens with a vivid bouquet of yellow apples, incense, chamomile and a dusting of confectionary spice. It contrasts salty mineral tones, lime and Granny Smith tartness with juicy acidity to create a tense yet zesty performance on the palate. Masterfully done. In my opinion, the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is one of the most overlooked and underrated wines in the Tiberio portfolio. Colpetrone’s 2015 is indeed a big, dark, brooding red wine, but offers far better balance than most Sagrantino di Montefalcos with nice suave tannins. This is the kind of wine meant for cold weather cuisine like braises, stews, meat-sauced pastas and the like. It’s also a really good deal for this type of wine. “Brown spice, crushed fall leaves cherry sauce and a lifting hint of fresh mint form a darkly alluring bouquet as the 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino Memoira opens in the glass. This wine is sourced from some of the oldest vines in Sancerre, around 80 years old and situated in the choicest site of the steep Monts Damnes (the "damned mountain") vineyard - the most famous and highly regarded Sauvignon Blanc vineyard in the world. Labaille’s 2023 offers complex aromas of quince, pink grapefruit, kiwi, oregano and limestone. The palate shows excellent balance with an intense mineral vein complementing the wine's almost perfect fruit expression and citrusy finish.It’s so refreshing as an aperitif and so versatile at the table. 100% Chenin Blanc. The discovery of a new and exciting wine has to be one of my favorite things. Having rehabilitated old vines on steep slopes outside the tiny village of Rochefort-Sur-Loire in Anjou, Mathilde Magne is making some seriously compelling wines. Aromas of pear, quince, and stony notes waft from the glass. The palate is lively - longer than wide - with a slight sort of fat that's cut by proper acidity. At this youthful stage, its energy is still contained somewhat, but it feels coiled. The finish is salient and slightly bitter with some nice dry extract. This a big cuvee of Chenin that will evolve for many years. And, perhaps the illusory, MC Escher like, label art will keep you captivated while the wine ages in your cellar!
